A view from Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views the human body as a mini eco-system, the weakness of certain parts or organs, like liver or kidneys, may be evidenced by symptoms like hair loss while other parts are still healthy. The underlining mechanism for hair loss is based on hormone and body regulation.

In a very classic view of the TCM, kidney determines the condition of bone and marrow - “has its manifestations in hair”. Although the nutrients for hair come from the blood, its life mechanism originates from the kidney. This is because the kidney stores the essence of life.

The nourishing and sufficient essence of life and blood lead to strong and healthy-looking hair. Most people who have sparse or withered hair and/or loss of hair are due to insufficient supply of nutrients, caused by health conditions such as prolonged illnesses, operation, giving birth and lack of sleep etc.

Those who are bald or have grey hair due to premature ageing may suffer from lack of the essence life of kidney and deficiency of blood.

Stress and anxiety may also result in sudden hair loss and is the main cause for middle-aged men and women.

The treatments in TCM
One of the most significant treatment principles TCM is to coordinate the functions of several herbs, with one as a leader to improve the designed organ and others to support. Acupuncture treatment may also be used depending on the cause. Best results can be achieved by a combination of external treatment using e.g. 101 hair tonic and herbal medicines for internal use.

Deficiency of Kidney Yin.
The main symptoms are dry hair accompanied by hair loss. Patients are usually feel hot, tired, irritable, thirst, tinnitus etc. The treatment principle is to nourish the kidney yin and to nourish the hair, of course. The leading herb for this is Prepared Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang).

Deficiency of Blood
Hair loss and withered hair are the main symptom for this type of hair loss. The patients may also suffer from headache, insomnia, poor appetite, lack of energy. Tonifying the blood and nourishing hair is the treatment principle.

Proper Hair Care
The following tips can help you maintaining healthy hair.

  • Use only gentle hair products, such as herbal shampoo, to prevent dryness of the hair and scalp. If you have an oily scalp, frequent shampooing will keep the hair from staying flat, weighted down by the fats in sebum.
  • Use a soft baby brush, for example - particularly if your scalp feels tender, avoid using excessive heat from hairdryers or heated rollers, as this can over-dry the hair and make it break.
  • Use a gentle unperfumed moisturizer on your scalp if it becomes dry, flaky or itchy. Natural oils such as almond oil, or olive oil are a good alternative.
